They've been training for months, years - decades, for some - leading up to a singular moment in the Olympic competition. And then the unthinkable happens. Check out some of the more unpredictable, and oftentimes painful, moments of the Beijing Olympics.

The United States' LoLo Jones was on her way to Olympic gold in the final of the 100-meter hurdles -- until the very end. Jones, right, was leading the pack before she stumbled over the second-to-last hurdle and, as a result, placed seventh in the event, Aug. 19, 2008. At left are Dawn Harper of the U.S. and Jamaica's Delloreen Ennis-London, center. "You hit a hurdle about twice a year where it affects your race," said Jones, according to the Associated Press. "It's just a shame that it happened on the biggest race of my life."

The United States Matthew Emmons only needed to hit near the bull's eye to win the gold in the men's 50m Rifle Three Position shooting event on Aug. 17 at the Beijing Shooting Hall. However, his nerves got the best of him, and the bullet left the barrel early, knocking him out of medal contention. "The only thing I can figure is that my finger touched the trigger and set it off," Emmons told Time magazine. "It was an accident." Qiu Jian of China won the gold medal, Jury Sukhorukov of Ukraine the silver, and Rajmond Debevec of Slovenia the bronze.


The men's relay team will be able to commiserate with the women's relay team over their inability to successfully pass the baton. Torri Edwards, second from right, and Lauryn Williams, right, also missed an opportunity to compete in the finals of the 4 x 100m relay event after dropping their baton in a heat on Aug. 21.


The United States Sarah Hammer let out a cry of agony after crashing during the women's points race event at the Laoshan Velodrome on Aug. 18. Two cyclists clipped wheels in front of Hammer and the American cyclist didn't have time to avoid the pile-up.
