‘Just shut your beak, boy, and listen. Flap those wings up and down like your old dad does and then...’

It doesn’t take much to imagine the conversation this adult male kingfisher is having with his two-week-old offspring.

Wings outstretched and beaks open for a warble, they seem to be in the middle of a lesson of sorts.

Kingfisher bonding sessions are common at this time of year, according to Tim Strudwick, the manager of the reserve in Strumpshaw, Norfolk, where the birds live.

He said: ‘Kingfishers are very sociable during the breeding season and this could only be a father-son chat.

When the young leave the nest, the key thing for the parents is teach them how to fish and survive on their own.’ - daily mail
